Based on a podcast by the same name, this is a smart and thrilling show. Debra, the protagonist, is a single woman in her 50s. She is wealthy and incredibly successful. She has two daughters. She is navigating through the world of online dating in search of companionship till she meets John, a charming, handsome man (played by Eric Bana).
She falls head over heels in love with him and it seems like he was the one she was waiting for all her life. Things start moving really quickly after this. She’s so convinced of him that she moves in with him and ultimately, ends up marrying him. This is against the wishes of her daughters who believe that John is not who he seems to be. They object to their mother’s choice, but when has a person in love ever listened to anybody else?
Soon enough, we realize that the daughters were absolutely right about John. He is a serial con artist and Debra is only his latest bait. He is a pathological liar, has a drug problem and has a history of stalking and harassing women. What does he want with her? Is her life in danger? Does he get away with his con? When does Debra realize? And does she manage to save herself?
What makes Dirty John highly binge-worthy is the narrative flow – it seamlessly jumps from past to present without losing track of where its going. The performances add an extra punch. Connie Britton plays the role of a successful, confident woman who loses sense of herself in love really well. Eric Bana stands out as John, he makes you detest him – which is the mark of an effective performance.
Dirty John is the kind of show that will make you want to burn the midnight oil to finish. Don’t miss out!
